The sunflower (Helianthus) is the majestic queen of summer flowers. Is there any other flower which reminds us of the sun and the summer like the sunflower? Cheerful sunflowers are now widely available and bring the summer abundantly into the home.
They have been doing this for centuries: the Inca’s in South America worshipped the flower as a symbol of their sun god. At the beginning of the 1500’s Spanish sailors took the flower to Europe and since then we also associate the sunflower with sun and summer.
The scientific name for the sunflower, Helianthus says it all: Helio means sun and Anthos means flower.
