Even the late summer brings many happy hours. Now depleted summer flowers are replaced with autumn flowering bulbs which once again conjure new color impressions on balcony and terrace. Late summer days invite us to plant. The sooner the plants get into the ground, the better they will be rooted and delight us well into December. Many varieties then restart in the spring.

Evergreen boxwood ball topiaries might be classic exemplars of container plants, but there are other woody plants that will thrive in large pots and delight the senses with comely flowers and tasty fruit. Skilfully placed on balconies or terraces, container plantings can serve as a privacy screen and wind shield that also provide color, fragrance, and enjoyment to every spot.

There are many plants that can be grown in a sufficiently large planter on a balcony or patio for some Mediterranean flair. Even woody plants such as laurel (bay) and grapevines. Trees with a spreading habit like mulberry and plane trees have large leaves that will lend shade during the warm months.
